ANNS support for COVID-19

Dear respected seniors, friends and families,

As all of us are coping with the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic, we hope everyone is staying safe and following general health guidelines.  We can’t stress enough that the best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. So, please practice recommended measures including keeping a safe distance “Social Distancing” while interacting with others amongst other things to protect you and your family’s health in this fragile situation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a global health crisis and also impacted our lives in upstate New York.  As a Nepalese society working for the welfare of Nepali community living in upstate New York, ANNS is highly committed in providing necessary support to all Nepalese living in and around Albany.

In this pandemic situation, if any family is quarantined or facing challenges due to COVID-19 and need help, please contact below listed ANNS members for necessary support!

IMPORTANT*****

ANNS has separated a fund of $5000 to help COVID-19 affected families. This fund is allocated by the ANNS Board to help with the much-needed assistance for the affected families.

This will include;

  1. Up to $300 worth of groceries and other essential items to the COVID-19 affected ANNS members’ family and $100 worth items to non-members’ families.
  2. ANNS has also mobilized a COVID-19 Swat team in arranging the necessary purchase and delivery of essential items to the quarantined family.

Miss Nepal Albany Festival of Nations Candidates Needed

We are looking for candidates to represent Nepal at the Miss Festival Contest on October 27, 2018 and November 4, 2018. Young women ages 14-18 with parents who are members of the Albany New York Nepalese Society and who would like to represent ANNS at the festival are encouraged to apply. To apply, please complete the attached application  and write a one page essay autobiography. Selection of Miss Nepal AFON will be by several judges, and all candidates will be recognized.  Candidates will be questioned about their essays and involvement with the Nepalese community.

There are two sessions where Miss Nepal AFON will compete with candidates from other countries. The first will be on the evening of October 27 at the Marriott Hotel on Wolf Road. The second will be the afternoon of the Festival of Nations on November 4, 2018. Each of these involves answering questions while each contestant wears the dress from the country they represent. Judging is based on answering the questions.

Selection of Miss Nepal AFON is scheduled for 7 pm on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at the home of Mohan and Jane Thapa in Troy, NY. If you would like to participate, please complete the attached form and send the form and your one-page essay by Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 1 pm.  Judges who are not members of the Nepalese community will volunteer to participate. If you would like to participate but are unable to attend at that time, please let me know and we will try to make accommodations. Please confirm that you would like to participate as soon as possible so the judges can be finalized.

Smarika “Souvenir” publication submission important information

This is a follow up to our previously announced Smarika “Souvenir” publication tentatively to be published by upcoming Dashin 2075 BS with its very first issue.

As mentioned before, the publication committee has been established with its main focus in putting fourth a great publication. So with this message we would like to encourage everyone for their involvement and contribution in sending necessary materials, articles, poems, pictorial contents, kid’s activity, and other editorials along with any advertisement and announcement that you may be interested in publishing.

Guidelines for submissions:

  • Deadline for submissions: June 30th 2018

  • All contents needs to be in .docx format (Nepali or English only)

Governor Cuomo’s State of the State Policy Presentation

We would like to share an important upcoming event that is being communicated by APAPA,

You will need to register by Friday morning 19th of January, 2018.

NYS Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul is going to present Governor Cuomo’s state of the state proposals and policy ideas at 6:30 pm on January 22 at Chinese Community Center at 11 Avis Dr. Latham, NY 12110. This is the first time ever that the Governor’s office has sent a high-level official to explain the policies specifically to the Asian American population in the Capital Region.

This is a great opportunity for us to show our solidarity and commitment and later on to make an impact. Our goal is to have at least 75 people in the audience. Please try to bring 10 to 20 people from your community to attend this event. The more the merrier.

On behalf of the Election Committee, we would like to congratulate newly elected Officers and Board Members!

The Election Committee, in agreement with the Bylaws, conducted the election process for the four executive committee positions, the five executive committee general officers, and the four members of the board of directors. At the General Assembly, 65% of the paid members were present. This meets the quorum requirement of fifty-one percent of members.

The APAPA Albany Chapter (ALC), together with the Chinese Community Center (CCC), are bringing an Internship Program to the New York State Capitol Region, with the purpose to promote and prepare high school and college students of Asian Pacific Islander American background to become future leaders in the State of New York. This program is designed to provide an opportunity for students to work in the offices of legislative and executive branches of city, town, county and state governments as staff interns in the New York State Capitol region. The program will also provide training and mentoring to help candidates develop leadership skills, gain public service and public policy making experience, and become civically engaged.

Festival of Nations 2016

This years Festival of Nations is being Held on Sunday 23rd October 2016 Empire State Plaza – Convention Center (From 11:30 AM to 5:00 PM)

We are planning on participating in below programs and we are looking for your support as well as contribution in making it a success!


Cultural Program
Maximum of 10 minutes for as many dancers and songs as we want. The festival awards for larger groups of dancers which look better on the stage. This can be the same program as Dashain party. Can also have singers, although dancers is preferred.

Food
Volunteers needed. Sell tea and preferable a sweet or savory snack item that does not require heating. If you are interested in volunteering or have an ideas please let us know.

Times Union – Raising funds for Nepal quake victims

COLONIE — A brunch to raise money to benefit those affected by the recent Nepal earthquake was held Sunday at the Hindu Temple Cultural Center in Loudonville. The fundraiser was held by the Hindu Temple Society and the Nepalese community. Money raised will be delivered directly to those in need in Nepal by a member of the society, who will travel there in early July. The society will continue to accept donations through the middle of June.
